Bobby Mickel

Bobby Yual Mickel, 79, of Dayton, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at his family home on April 27, 2026, surrounded by family and friends. Born on September 10, 1946, to George and Elsie Stinnett Mickel at his family farm, Bobby remained deeply rooted there throughout his life and passed in the home he always cherished, just as he had wanted.

A lifelong resident of Dayton, Bobby began working on the railroad at just 18 years old, a path that would shape his life’s work. He later founded Bobby Mickel Trackwork Services, subcontracting with Norfolk Southern for over 50 years. Throughout his career, he was known not only for his dedication but also for mentoring many men, instilling in them a strong work ethic and pride in their craft.

Outside of his railroad career, Bobby developed a passion for cattle farming, which began as a hobby and grew into a full-time pursuit after his retirement. He became a trusted source of knowledge for many, often receiving calls from friends seeking advice on cattle and mechanical issues. Though he could be a little rough around the edges, Bobby was a kind-hearted man who loved deeply and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Kenneth Mickel, Clarence Mickel, Marvin Mickel, and Clyde Mickel; and his sisters, Myrtice Peavyhouse, Melrose Mickel, Willie Mae Swafford, and Georgia Locke.

Bobby is survived by his loving wife, Janice Mickel; his stepdaughter, Vicki Varnell (Jason); his brothers, Felix Mickel, Jim Mickel (Sandra), Rick Mickel (Yvonne), Sam Mickel (Virginia), and Gene Mickel; and his sister, Lois Coppinger (Jeff).

Bobby will be remembered for his strength, his knowledge, and the lasting impact he made on those who knew him and worked with him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.

Visitation will be held from 4:00–7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1st at Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Buttram Cemetery. The family has asked for donations to Rhea of Hope or RC3 in lieu of flowers.
