Edwin E. Shaver “Ed”, 92, of Dayton, TN passed away January 21, 2020 while at Laurelbrook Nursing Home.
A lifelong resident of Dayton, TN, Ed spent his early years in the Salem community. He attended Frazier Grammar School. At age 16, his family relocated to their new farm atop Dayton Mountain. Ed attended Rhea Central High School where he graduated in 1945 as Valedictorian of his class.
Ed graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a degree in Agriculture. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII at Ft. Belvoir, VA and in Japan.
In 1951 Ed obtained a job with TVA at Kingston Steam Plant. Later he transferred to Watts Bar where he retired after 35 years in 1986.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Katholeen Woollen Shaver, an infant brother and sister and 4 brothers, Ray, Dean, Alvin and Jimmy.
Ed was devoted to his family. He attended a lifelong tradition of the annual Shaver Reunion where hundreds of Shavers reunited each July. He supported his boys in all of their endeavors. He and Mary Nell followed them in all directions as they participated in sports. Ed teamed with Delano Cochran for a stint of coaching baseball for several years.
Ed also supported his grandchildren as they participated with sports and activities until he was not able.
Ed farmed throughout life and then enjoyed golfing, gardening, mowing, watching sports and keeping his “side of the mountain” immaculate and cleaned.
Ed was a strong man of faith, hardly ever missing church services. He was a member of Walden’s Ridge Baptist Church where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Ed leaves behind his devoted wife of 64 years, Mary Nell Shelby Shaver and four sons, Eddie Jr (Joyce) Shaver of Hazel Green, AL, Jerry (Edie) Shaver of Dayton, TN, Steve (Gina) Shaver of Waynesboro, GA, Ted (Rhonda) Shaver of Kingsport, TN; sisters, Ora Fay Bishop of San Diego, CA, Linda Hinds of Dayton, TN and brother, Lynn Shaver of Dayton, TN
Ed was a devoted Pappaw to his 10 grandchildren, Alex (Jennifer) , Shane (Jo Lynn) of Dayton, Blake (Molly) of Huntsville, AL, Derrick (Lindsay) of Knoxville, Cathy (Tim) Grundman of Clarksville, TJ of Knoxville, Cassie, Torie, Maddie of Kingsport and Cyrena (Aaron) O’Bryant of Chattanooga.
Ed had 10 great grandchildren, Allie, AJ, Avery, Justin, Gwen, Andrew, Keylon, Reid, Jace and Kinsley and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to Laurelbrook Nursing Home for the wonderful care that our loved one was given. The compassion the staff and caretakers showed to us has meant the world.
Service will be Sunday, January 26, 2020 at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral with Rev. Jerry Levengood officiating. Interment will follow at Shaver Cemetery.
Family will receive friends Sunday, January 26, 2020 from12:00-2:00pm.
