Elizabeth Jane Burgess Jewell passed away June 20, 2021, at the age of 100 years and 78 days. She was born April 2nd, 1921, in Catlettsburg, Boyd County, Kentucky to Gordon Cloyd Burgess (1886-1952) and Ella Hinkle Burgess (1883-1967). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Delmar Jewell (1921-1987). Betty was a teacher and began her career at age 17 in Peach Orchard, Lawrence County, Kentucky at a one-room school. After moving with her family to Tennessee in 1952, she worked in Rhea County, Tennessee, Schools and became their first certified Special Education teacher. A Center was developed for the purpose of teaching life skills to Special Needs children. Betty had many interests. She was an accomplished seamstress, a pianist for various churches, a beautician, a bookkeeper and was always active with crafts. Betty was physically handicapped by polio at an early age and struggled with her disabilities throughout life. With constant determination, she overcame her difficulties with mobility issues and led a full and rewarding life. Betty is survived by her first cousin, David Randolph Cassell of Columbia, Missouri, and her cousin/caregiver, Carolyn Hinkle Hale, of Dayton, Tennessee. Also surviving are a host of cousins from the Hinkle and Burgess families, a brother-in-law Kenneth Jewell and numerous nieces and nephews of the Jewell family. The family would like to thank long-term friends and caregivers, Mark Butterfield, Patsy Fann, Kim Cranfill and Rhonda Marshall.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 24, 2021 from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM.
There will be a service on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home.
