Gladys Best, age 89, of Dayton, TN, passed away at her home on December 6, 2021. She was a lifelong resident of Rhea County and of the Methodist faith. Gladys was the longest serving elected official in the state of Tennessee, having won 14 terms as Registrar of Deeds and serving Rhea County for 56 years before retiring in 2018. She was active in the Republican Party and the Red Cross Organization, she liked to bowl and play softball. Gladys loved people, and they loved her in return.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Laura (Morgan) Best; brothers, Roy Best and Morgan Best; sisters, Laura Jean Best and Mary Elizabeth Mitchell.
She is survived by her brother, Freddy (Betty) Best of Dayton, TN; nieces, Diane Mitchell and Gail Best-Mount; nephew Mark Best; and special friend, Lisa McAllister.
Service for Gladys will be at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at Vine Grove Mt. Olive UMC Church with Rev. Bill Ewing and Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow at French Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton, TN.
