James Carroll Thurman Sr., 88 passed away on Saturday February 15th, 2020 at his home with his children by his side.
He was a son, husband, father and friend. He was born and raised in Rhea County, spent 34 years in Elyria, Ohio before returning to Rhea County in 1991. He was of Baptist faith, and was a proud U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He served as Commander of the American Legion Post 203 in Spring City for 16 years. He was awarded Tennessee State Legionnaire in 2008. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW.
Proceeded in death by his wife, Mary Helen (Swafford) Thurman; parents, Grover and Bertie Thurman; sisters, Mattie Davis, Irene Pritchard, and Gladys “Buck” Wilson; brothers, Carl, Grover “Geck”, William H. “Red” Thurman.
Survivors include children, Earl Thurman of Dayton, Sherry (Jackie) Knox of Pikeville, Debbie (Rich) Briggs of Evensville, Jim (Marcie) Thurman of Dayton, Tammy Hawk of Dayton; sister, Betty Jo Alley (Charles) of Hixson; brothers, Clyde and Leroy Thurman of Spring City; nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Service will be Tuesday, February 18th, 2020 at 11:00am at Coulter Garrison Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Spring City Memory Gardens.
Family will receive friends Monday, February 17th, 2020 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.
