Jerry Martin Obituary

Jerry Leon Martin passed from this life on September 9, 2026, at the age of 78.

The son of the late Clarence (Jack) and Louise Martin, Jerry grew up in Sale Creek, where the early lessons he learned would forever shape the person he was. He learned the value of a hard day's work at an early age, a foundation that built a lifetime of quiet strength and generosity. He faced many physical hardships, but his strength and determination never wavered, and he carried an indomitable work ethic throughout his whole life. He learned to be resourceful and use what he had. He could fix just about anything in a way that would leave you somewhat puzzled but overwhelmingly impressed with his ingenuity.

A true testament to his humble upbringing, Jerry had a selfless spirit and would do anything he could to help others, whether times were lean or plentiful. He would gladly share his last dollar or last bite of food with someone in need without a second thought.

In his early years spent wandering local creek banks, Jerry also developed a love of fishing that would be a defining aspect of his life.  Many of his days were spent fishing or dreaming about fishing, and it was never too hard to covnice him to take a little trip to cast a line with you.

While Jerry loved fishing, there was nothing in life he cherished more than his family.  He was a devoted husband to the love of his life, his late wife Shirley, and he spent more than 55 years making sure she was well cared for, happy, and loved.  He was also a loving father to his children Jay (Tracy) Martin and Vickie (Brian) Shaver. He doted on his grandchildren Ashley (Michael) Garrison, Devin Shaver, Aidyn and Gage Martin, and especially his new great-grandson Dallas Garrison, who he affectionately dubbed “Smiley.”

If you were blessed enough to know Jerry, then you know he never met a stranger.  He could talk to anyone, and he loved to share memories, stories, and jokes any chance he got.  He leaves behind a legacy of sharing joy, love, and laughter that his family will work hard to continue.

While Jerry will be missed every day, and it is hard to say goodbye, it brings comfort to know he is finally reunited with many friends and loved ones he has been longing to see including his wife and infant daughter(Delores), his parents, and his beloved brother, Tom. It brings peace to know that his worries and pains are over, and his body has been restored.   We will carry his memory with us each day until we meet again.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe. Psalm 4:8
