Roy Layman Obituary

Roy Newton Layman of Spring City died July 18, 2026 at Starr Regional Medical Center in Athens, Tennessee, which was called Epperson Hospital when he was born there on June 10, 1945.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Freeman Layman, step-mother Louise Layman, mother Alma Lewis Layman, brother Lewis Layman and sisters Peachy Layman (Don) Wallis and Julia Layman (Duard) Inzer, niece Gail Inzer Baker and nephew Joey Inzer.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eva Harris Layman; daughter, Janet Layman; son, Jonathan (Heather) Layman; grandchildren, Tyler Layman and Hailey Layman: sister, Jayne Layman Keyser;  special folks: Kathy Wallis Changas, Tim Rutledge, Bryan Pope, Rhonda Henderson, Jeff and Kelly (Mulkey) Dodson and Jim Linger, as well as a host of Layman and Harris Family members.

Newton was a Deacon at Yellow Creek Baptist Church for more than fifty years and was retired from the Dayton Housing Authority. He loved to farm and was a go-to mechanic for much of the community. He served our country in the Air National Guard.

A visitation will be held at Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home on Monday, July 20, 2026 from 5:00 –-7:00 p.m. and a funeral service in the chapel on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. visitation will be one hour prior to the service,  with a graveside service at Spence Cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Gideons International or Yellow Creek Baptist Church would be a loving memory.
