Sam G. Simmons Jr., of Dayton, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2026, at the age of 71. He was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on April 29, 1954, to Sam G. Simmons Sr. and Mary Burns Shook.
Sam was a gentle, kind, loyal, and loving man who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was a devoted family man and was proudly known as the best “Grampy” ever. He loved animals, enjoyed music from the 1970s, and treasured time spent with his family above all else. Sam was also a coin collector, a history buff, and a dedicated fan of Tennessee football and the Atlanta Braves.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam G. Simmons Sr. and Mary Burns Shook; his grandparents, Robert and Emma Shook and Charles and Della Simmons; his brother, Randy Bryson; his second wife, Phyllis; and his son, Toby Simmons.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Donna Whitfield Simmons; his sons, Dylan (Mallory) Simmons and Chris Simmons; his bonus sons, Kevin (Jaime) Whitfield and Gabe (Kate) Whitfield; his grandchildren, Keeley and Lucas Simmons; his bonus grandchildren, Drey (Auburn) Whitfield, Aiden Raichl, Harrison Whitfield, Andrew Judd, Haley Judd, and Jonah Smith; his bonus great-grandchildren, Willow Whitfield and Oakleigh Whitfield; his sisters, Martha, Carole, and Linda Sue Simmons; his sister-in-law, Eva Hickman; his nephews, David and Jeff Hekking and Jonathan Bowers; his niece, Alyssa Runyeon; and many cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Friday at 6:00 PM in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Runyeon officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until the time of service
