Velma Jean Baugh

Velma Jean Baugh, age 84, of Dayton, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026, with her loving family by her side. She was born on December 11, 1941, in Bakewell, Tennessee, to the late James C. and Idell Hickman Swafford.

She was of the Baptist faith and loved the Lord, finding strength and guidance in her relationship with God throughout her life. As one of many children born to her parents, she learned at an early age the importance of family, love, and caring for one another. Those values remained close to her heart and were reflected in the devotion and compassion she shared with her own family throughout the years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Baugh; her son, Melvin B. Todd; her brother, James C. Swafford, Jr.; and her sister, Bennie Mae Keith.

She is survived by her three daughters, A. Renee (Mark) Hickman of Dayton, Tennessee, Karen A. (Barry) Nelson of California, and Candace McBride of Chattanooga, Tennessee. She is also survived by her siblings: Helen Steward of California; Stanley (Bobbie) Swafford of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Sherry Simmons of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Wanda (Richard) Thurman of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Christine (Manzell) Johnson of Bakewell, Tennessee; Debra (Robert) Smith of Bakewell, Tennessee; Kirkland (Patsy) Swafford of California; Tamera (Alonzo) Banks of Dayton, Tennessee; and Latonia (Mortimer) Davenport of Nashville, Tennessee , sister in law Linda Swafford of Bakewell.. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Nina, Myisha, Marc, Jamaal, Vivian, Kristorfer, Kayla, Quinci, Justin, Kylin, Jamiah, Kameron, and Aesha; sixteen great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Dayton City Cemetery.
